NECK PAIN AND NECK PAIN BELTS

In this week’s blog from Orthomedical India, we shall discuss Neck pain and neck pain belts, based on inputs from American Chiropractic Association. The most common form of neck pain is posterior neck pain or pain in the back of the neck. This region is responsible for the support and movement of the head. According to American Chiropractic Association, ” any type of injury or a disorder to the posterior neck can cause severe pain”

Neck has a complicated biomechanics. It supports the head, moves the head in various planes and carries the spinal cord and the spinal nerves from the brain to the lumbosacral region enclosed in a sheath in the spinal canal of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral group of vertebrae. The potential structures that can give rise to pain in the posterior part of neck are the skeletal structures, muscles, nerve roots as they come out of the spinal cords, referred pain from retropharyngeal region – lying just anterior to the cervical vertebrae, temporomandibular joints etc.

The common causes of posterior neck pain are

Bad posture –While working for long hours on computers, when the screen is at a lower level than the eye requiring flexing the neck.

Sleeping in incorrect posture – while lying flat, a very thin soft pillow should be used to just enough support the neck, while on sides, the height of the pillow should be enough to prevent lateral flexion or extension of the neck and should fill the hollow above the lower shoulder.

Acute injuries – Whiplash injury – car accidents, road traffic injuries, joy rides in parks causing neck jerks etc.

Rheumatoid arthritis – Referred pain from inflamed temporomandibular joint, stylohyoid ligaments can give rise to referred pain to the posterior neck region.
