Herniated Disc & Traction Theraphy

In this week’s blog from www.orthomedical.in, we are going to understand about Herniated disc and how traction theraphy can be used to treat this condition. Human body consists of 33 vertebrae and fibrous cartilage intervertebral discs. Intervertebral disc consists of annulus fibrosus (approximately 1 cm thick) and nucleus pulposus (jelly-like substance, 88% is water). These alleviate the load and impulse of upper body. Herniated disc is the disease that annulus fibrosus of intervertebral disc is deformed by continuous pressure or improper body posture, and therefore, nucleus pulposus comes out of its original position and suppresses the spinal canal or nerve so that patients feel pain in their waist, legs and thigh etc.

What is traction therapy?
Traction therapy reduces the pressure in the lumbar vertebrae, putting back protruded nucleus pulposus in its original position. In other words, it is a physical therapy that bilaterally pulls upper and lower part of the body and widens the interval between lumbar or cervical vertebrae.

Obstruction in treatment
Herniated disc needs time to recover naturally, however, there is always a load of upper body to the lumbar vertebrae so that “the herniated disc” easily recurs despite of treatment.

What if continuous traction therapy is possible?
If continuous treatment is possible to reduce the pressure in the lumbar vertebrae, the herniated disc is instead an easy disease to treat. Disk Dr. is the device that makes continuous treatment possible. Disk Dr. has the same effect as the traction therapy you can receive in the hospital. Moreover, it makes continuous treatment possible during everyday life while hospital treatment is only temporary. Also through the ambulatory traction therapy, you can obtain effects of correcting posture and enhancing the physical strength around the intervertebral disc.

Traction Principal of Disk Dr.
Using air pressure, Disk Dr. lifts the upper body so that it drastically alleviates the pressure in intervertebral disc and reduces the pressure in nerves. Reduction of pressure makes protruded cartilage substance (annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus), which is the fundamental cause of the pain, return to its original position. Proper pressure to lift the upper body enables continuous traction treatment. Besides, in order to continue traction treatment during everyday life, Disk Dr. is manufactured slimly to fit in with human body. No one would notice it, and you can still keep on your everyday and leisure life with no inconvenience.
